Abstract
The aim of this study was to quantify how many serious motor vehicle crashes occur in rural areas more than 45 minutes drive from a major trauma centre (MTC) and in areas more than 45 minutes by helicopter from an MTC. It also sought to establish how many people involved in car crashes more than 45 minutes drive from an MTC would have to be taken to the MTC by ambulance because helicopters cannot fly to the crash sites.
