Abstract

Fire and rescue services are increasingly employing specialized fire service nurses (FSNs) or nurses with advanced practice nursing degrees. A study conducted a national assessment of the presence of these specific FSNs across France, analyzing the impacts at the organizational level. The qualitative analysis revealed that the presence of these professionals is a source of opportunities (improved care, enhanced institutional reputation), but also of internal tensions (divisions, costs, compartmentalization). Changes to the regulatory framework are needed to legislate and recognize the scope of these FSNs' competencies.
